5 Tips for Homeschooling Your Child During COVID-19

Deciding to homeschool your child is a major decision, and during the current times, with an unyielding virus and lots of things to consider, homeschooling may be the best thing for you and your family.

5 Tips for Homeschooling Your Child During COVID-19

Homeschooling is something that should not be taken lightly because your child does need to receive a well-rounded education. However, if you’re stressing about how you’re going to manage working and homeschooling your child, here are five secrets to help you and your child enjoy the homeschooling process this year.

5 Secrets to ACTUALLY ENJOY Homeschooling your kids during COVID-19

  1. Create a schedule and form routines. Children thrive on routine. While you may be a person who likes to get up and plan your day once you wake up, children do better when they know exactly what’s going to happen every single day. If you’re new to the homeschooling process, then you can plan your schedule week by week, but your child needs to see the schedule so they can form routines that will make the whole process more fluid.
  2. Teach what you know. I have news for you. You don’t need to teach every single subject. While your child does need to be well-rounded in math, English, and the sciences, you don’t have to teach those subjects to them. There are plenty of resources that will allow your child to learn the subjects you’re not good at, such as online resources and virtual instructors, which means the only subjects you have to teach are the ones that you enjoy.
  3. Incorporate music. Many studies show that music can help concentration and alleviate boredom, so instead of forcing your child to study in a quiet room with no distractions, allow them to play classical, lyric-free music while they work. Let your child select the songs they want to listen to because this will give them the opportunity to be engaged in their learning environment, which can make the whole process of homeschooling much easier.
  4. Strive for connection, not perfection. Our whole society is founded on being perfect, but in these uncertain times, it’s more important to be able to connect with your child than it is to make sure they have a five-star, perfect education. Instead of stressing about your child’s reading level, for example, consider reading one chapter of your favorite book with your child every single day. This connection is something they will never forget and will also give you one-on-one time that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
  5. Let go and have fun. Finally, don’t be afraid to let go and have fun. The truth is, with only your children to worry about, school doesn’t have to happen for eight hours a day. With a schedule and a working routine, your child can finish their academic subjects in the morning, and then they can do more hands-on activities in the evening. This is an opportunity for you to teach your child life skills along with engaging in fun activities that they would not be able to do in a regular school setting.

It’s tempting to think of homeschooling as additional stress in your life, but the opportunity to homeschool your child is something that should be cherished. Homeschooling your child will not be an easy task, but these five tips will make the process of homeschooling your child much easier.
